The Reality of Redemption

TEXTS: Romans 3:21; Colossians 1:13, 14

WORD STUDY: The word “inheritance” found in (Colossians 1:12) literally means, “lot”, “portion” or “a person’s share”. The Greek term is {Gr: klēros} which has several meanings, also from where we get the word “Clergy” which means “in Charge”.  But focusing on our text, the context in Col. 1:12 is [Gr: kleronomia], “an inheritance,”. This can also be found in Act 26:18. It deals with what God has in grace assigned to the sanctified or believers in Christ. The other keyword “light” [Gr: phōs] talks about God as Light. He is both the Source and the Light. Therefore, believers have inheritance in Christ, the Source of Life and everything that exists just as light is the source of life.

INTRODUCTION: Redemption has been a theological word in the minds of most believers, but Apostle Paul, through the Holy Spirit is giving us a deeper understanding of the word. It is redemption that made our righteousness possible. The Holy Spirit through Apostle Paul speaks of a Righteousness that comes to man only through faith in Jesus Christ, and belongs to all those who acknowledge Christ as Saviour and confess Him as their Lord. They are justified freely on the ground of grace, through the Redemption that God laid our sins and diseases upon Jesus- that ‘Him who knew no sin, God made to become sin that we might become the righteousness of god in Him.” 2 Cor. 5:21

  1. GOD IN CHRIST PUT SIN AWAY (REMISSION OF SIN)- Ephesian 1:7
  • In Christ, God removed the power of Sin through the substitutionary sacrifice
  • In Christ, the universal claim of Justice was satisfied. God is no more angry with man
  • In Christ, the power of the adversary to enforce the reward of Sin on believers was broken
  • In Christ, satan was stripped of his authority to steal, kill and destroy at will

  1. IN CHRIST WE HAVE ETERNAL REDEMPTION – Hebrews 9:11,12
  • The Court of God has granted all humanity provisional redemption and Eternal life in Christ
  • The New Creation believers are now seated with Christ at the Right Hand of the Father.
  • The Redemption we have in Christ in the New Covenant is also retro-active covering our past sins
  • The Redemption that come through Jesus perfected the faith of the Old Covenant believers

  1. IN CHRIST, WE HAVE BECOME NEW CREATION-  Ephesians 2:10
  • We are created in the nature of Adam, but Recreated in the Nature of the Resurrected Christ
  • The New Creation is as real as the Redemption. Before God, we are brand new people
  • The New Birth (Born Again) is the rebirth of the spirit of man. (John 3:3-8)
  • God personally worked out the entire miracle of redemption and New Creation- (2 Cor. 5:18)
